To take a break from checking the genus names in the other families, I have started checking and updating the species (names) in Hesperiidae.
To do this I'm updating the Taxonomy associated with each name.
[Click "Taxonomy" in the "Content" menu in the left panel of the scratchpad. This will bring up page where you can select "Editor" to the
right of Hesperiidae. Click the right arrow until you the relevant name is highlighted. Adjust the revelvant dropdown menus, and add relevant data i.e. Authors and date.]
I'm mostly getting my information from
The Global Lepidoptera Names Index
By George Beccaloni, Malcolm Scoble, Ian Kitching, Thomas Simonsen, Gaden Robinson, Brian Pitkin, Adrian Hine & Chris Lyal.
Website by Mike Sadka
A.k.a LepIndex (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/research-curation/research/projects/lepindex/)
I'm also adding a link to the card as content (in the "Page" block) on each species mash-up.
While I'm at it I'm also adding synomyms to the taxonomy. These appear as red children(!) of the valid species names.
I'm also adding the venacular names from the original species list (http://sgbug.blogspot.com/2010/03/checklist-of-butterflies-of-peninsular...)
Next I'm adding a "Taxon Description" to each species mash-up.
[Click "Taxon Description" in the "Content" menu in the left panel of the scratchpad.]
In the Taxon Description I'm adding information about the Distribution, basically just the type locality (TL) mined from the LepIndex, whether the species is barcoded (this is easy to find by clicking on the NCBI content on the species scratchpad), and information about the caterpillar host plants. I'm getting the information about the host plants from another NHM database, this time
